Be a change agent. As an urban planner, you’ll help develop land use plans to create, expand or revitalize communities. An urban planner has a lot of responsibilities. After all, this is the person who works to help build a community.
You’ll meet with public officials, developers and the community to discuss and make plans for future growth, whether it’s transforming an empty property into the newest shopping center or determining if your community has enough roadways for future population growth.
An urban planner analyzes data from market research, censuses and economic and environmental studies. You will also be an expert in zoning and building codes, environmental regulations and other legal issues.
Most urban planners earn a bachelor’s degree in economics, geography, political science, or environmental design before getting a master’s degree from an accredited urban or regional planning program.
