Not everyone learns the same. That’s why the SPED certification teaches you how to teach kids who learn differently. Special education teachers are truly special. They work with students who have learning differences, from dyslexia dyscalculia to autism and Down’s Syndrome.
As a special education teacher, you will work with parents, specialists and the school to make sure each child receives a tailored learning approach. For some students, special education courses may only include math skills or specific subjects where extra help is needed. For other students, the approach may focus on daily life skills such as hand washing or tying shoelaces. Regardless the learning difference, the goal is to prepare and help students transition from grade to grade, milestone to milestone, from school to life outside of school.
Special education teachers are needed at all grade levels, from early childhood through secondary education. In addition to a bachelor’s degree from a university accredited by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, you’ll need to complete a special education certification and Educator Preparation Program.
